Sedimentation is smothering Kenya’s coral reefs

Posted by Bernadette Oburi | Malindi, Kenya

The amount of sediment washing out from the Sabaki River seems to be increasing because of development along the river. I see this sediment beginning to smother corals in reef areas that are used by our tourist snorkeling industry - a vital part of our economy. I feel like there must be some way to raise new corals to plant them that can cope with sediments or do a scientific review of lost economic value from sediments that would motivate the government to stop destructive upstream river development. Can you please help Kenya's corals.
