OpenLitterMap.com – Open Data on Plastic Pollution with Blockchain Rewards (Littercoin)

Posted by Seán Lynch | Cork, Ireland

There is a lack of incentive for people to create open data on plastic pollution

Many data providers don't share data as open data because of the complete lack of support available for open data, and many ordinary users do not question the openness of the data they are creating. This makes advancing research on plastic pollution incredibly problematic. Closed data leads to the privatisation of science, and the restriction of innovation, solutions, advocacy, transparency, and results. If we want to eradicate plastic pollution, there is no better way than by sharing data. Despite this, almost 20 grants have failed to support the development of OpenLitterMap.

Not only do we need a platform to create open data, we need to incentivize users to create open data.

That is why OpenLitterMap & Littercoin were born.

For more, read my paper:

OpenLitterMap works, but remains incredibly underdeveloped. There is no documentation, explainer videos, a logo, or mobile apps. I have a clear vision with 1000+ things on my to-do list.

What are we waiting for? Let's incentivize the most rapid production of crowdsourced OPEN DATA the world has ever seen and stop wasting our time creating closed data that nobody can access which is completely useless and redundant by design.
